from milan to scotland, based in barcelona
Born in 1963 in the city of Milan. She studied architecture at the Istituto Universitario de Architettura di Venezia, IUAV, where she graduated in 1989. Tagliabue expanded her studies to New York, but just after finishing her doctoral thesis in 1989 she moved to Barcelona. In 1991 she began collaborating with Enric Miralles, with whom she later joined to form the studio Miralles Tagliabue EMBT. This collaboration led them to place their studio among the most prestigious architectural workshops and international projection. The architecture workshop is characterized by the balance between a fragmented and convulsive aesthetics and respect for the tradition of the place.
Together with Enric Miralles, she developed a great architectural task, carrying out projects in both Catalonia and around the world, with special mention in the construction of the Scottish Parliament (1998-2004), which won an international competition. After the unexpected death of Miralles in 2000, Benedetta Tagliabue took the direction of the studio, continuing with the projects that both of them were building, the Hamburg School of Music (2000), the City Council of Utrecht in Holland (2000), the Diagonal Mar Park in Barcelona (2002), the University Campus of Vigo (2003), the Scottish Parliament (2004), the Santa Caterina Market (2005) and the Gas Natural building (2007 ).
In 2005 she was awarded the Spanish Architecture Biennial, the Manuel de la Dehesa Prize for her 2004 Scottish Parliament project, and the same year she won the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize, Best Building of 2005 by the Scottish Parliament, and with the National Prize of Cultural Heritage awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya for the Santa Caterina market in 2001. In 2009, she received the Ciutat de Barcelona Prize in the category of International projection for the Spanish Pavilion of the Universal Exhibition Shanghai 2010. In 2013, she joined the Advisory Board of Arts Santa Mònica
